Specially-abled tribal youth makes it to IIM
He is not regarded specially-abled for no reason.
For 28-year-old Ashok Kumar Maurya, a tribal youth from Mirzapur district of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, the long leap to IIM-Indore has been a feat of feats since he has been affected with polio since childhood.
Hailing from a poor family, odds were heavily against him but he did not lose focus. And ultimately, the fate smiled on Maurya who made it to the coveted management school this year.
''Determined hard work and belief in self have proved to be the key to my success,'' he said.
Despite failing to make it last year, he did not feel discouraged and rather became more focused to build a career in business management.
His father Nanhakuram Maurya has a small bakery shop in Mirzapur and he is one among five brothers and sisters.
After passing BSc (maths) in the first division from Mirzapur Degree College, Ashok aimed for IIM for a career in the business management.
At one point, he used to travel six hours daily to attend an MBA coaching at Varanasi.
Looking into the determination of Ashok, the coaching institute extended free coaching to him and provided special training for Group Discussion and interview.
''I never thought that I was as good as the others, who applied for these institutions, but my belief in myself was my strength which helped me a lot,'' he told PTI.
