Overview : Common Admission Test : An Introduction

CAT
CAT (Common Admission Test) is the entrance exam conducted by the IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management). The IIMs (which are seven in number and located at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Indore, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Lucknow and Shillong) are among the top best management institutes in India. The IIMs use CAT as a part of their selection process for their famed two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management.

While CAT was initially started as the entrance exam for the IIMs, over the last decade a few more management institutes tied up with the IIMs to use the applicants' CAT scores for admission into their respective institutes. There are more than 100 management institutes (other than the seven IIMs) that used CAT as a part of their selection process for the academic session starting in July 2009. For all the institutes that use CAT (including the IIMs), CAT is only one component of the selection process. Each institute conducts its own Group Discussion and/or Interview before deciding whether a student should be granted admission or not. CAT is typically conducted in the third week of November every year. However the IIMs have indicated that CAT 2009 will be a CBT (Computer Based Test) which will be conducted in a window of around 10 days towards the end of the year
